Once outside, Doshak gratefully stood to his full height, stretching with relief, and a wince, as joints popped and muscles loosened. His neck had never felt so tight, and it was at moments like this that he missed his former nest the most. Such discomfort would have been easy to fix there, as he’d have hundreds of females begging to rub any part of his body for him to ease tension.

He glanced down at Evie, who barely had to duck her head to get out of the doorway. He didn’t think she would ever beg to touch any part of him, and he shouldn’t want her to.

But he did.

Her expression was closed, her lips tight, and her shoulders squared. The amusement that had animated her features at his expense earlier when he’d hit his head had completely disappeared. He could only assume Gray had disappointed her as much as he’d disappointed Doshak.

Their Dominant had abdicated his position like a coward, walking away without giving Doshak the benefit of another trial of combat. Though this made Doshak Dominant again, there was no honor in gaining the position through such means.

It also seemed strange that Gray was so willing to give up what he’d once been willing to kill for. Yet, the words of his apparition had not seemed false to Doshak. Gray really wasn’t going to return to their nest. He was leaving them without his protection.

If Doshak could believe Gray was truly speaking from the Dark Nest beyond the veil of death, he would have felt more forgiving, but from Gray’s words, he had not fallen in the battle with the creatures that had attacked him. Instead, he’d simply decided he would leave them and had somehow projected his image into the talisman to tell them this.

It was now up to Doshak to seek a safe place to nest for his female.

In a strange land. When his female didn’t understand his language.

He was a hero. A legend. But he was no miracle worker. This was not the kind of battle he was accustomed to fighting. Normally, a wandering male sought out an established nest, one that already had hundreds of females spinning new cells, and at least a dozen males already guarding and feeding the nest. That wandering male then brought offerings to the Dominant or came to the nest with the intent of combat to take the Dominant’s place.

Wandering males didn’t build their own nest. They might find shelter in caves, or the ruins of old nests that had been torn apart by hungry Mountains seeking a meal. They might even venture into the stone structures that had been built by some long-lost civilization that lay buried beneath abandoned Mountain nests.

He was at a loss for what to do to make a nest.

Evie didn’t give him much time to come up with a plan. While he was staring at the surroundings, trying to think like a wandering male again, she started walking, directly towards the unusual forest.
